MUSIC
JACOB DANIELEY had always had an ear for country and gospel
music. He was a
part of the Elon University music scene during his years there
and, at age 25, has already played guitar or piano for other
artists on about 25 albums.
He has produced 15 albums through his Burlington company, Danieley Music.
And
this month, Danieley took his company to the Netherlands and
recorded tracks for an up-and-coming Dutch groups debut
CD-------the first international recording Danieley will have
produced. Originally
from Burlington, Danieley graduated early from Elon in 2010
with a degree in music technology, and took to the road,
touring with The Hoppers, a Southern gospel group.

state officials visited Iseley Farms to present the North
Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation DistrictsÕ
2013 Conservation Farm award for North Carolina to Iseley,
formally recognizing the conservation practices sheÕs
implemented to protect the soil and water that flows into the
Jordan Lake watershed.
Alamance
County
is one of 96 Soil and Water Conservation districts in the
state, and the districts have honored farmers for their
conservation efforts since the 1970s. In March, Iseley won the
award on the county level and this year she also won the
statewide honor ------------- a first for Alamance County.

November membership meeting of the MenÕs Garden Club, a
collection for the Toys For Tots program was held. The U. S. Marine
Corps Reserve Toys For Tots is a program to provide a tangible
sign of hope to economically disadvantaged children at
Christmas. ALVIS WEBSTER, from
the MenÕs Garden Club presented a check to STEVE FISHEL, a
member of the Lance Cpl. Alan D. Lam Det. 1209 Marine Corps
League in Burlington, North Carolina. Alvis also was among

RESTORATION OF CABLE SCHOOL MOVING FORWARD

Behind Rhodes Stadium at Elon University is a piece of
history. The old
Cable School, originally called the Travis Creek School, was
one of the North Carolina Commons Schools, the first public
school system in the state.
KAYE CABLE MURRAYÕs family donated the school to Elon, according to
a university news release.
The university is restoring it to be a working model of
a one-room school house. Work on the building
is underway by Reidsville restoration specialist Siler
Rothrock. When he
is done, Elon education teacher Marina Winter wants to fill it
with the furniture typical of schools of the time.
Actually,
she
would like to find some of furniture that came out of the old
school. ÒWe need
someone to come forward and say, ÔI have these 10 benches,Ó
winter said. ÒI
donÕt think thatÕs going to happen.Ó The Common Schools
started in North Carolina in the 1840s, according to an
independent research project by Elon student Martha McDuff in
1999. She worked
under the direction of Carole Watterson Troxler. Winter has been
using the school to teach her own students, who are learning
to teach social studies.
Social
studies,
Winter said, is not emphasized in
the Common Core or state accountability standards. So Winter is teaching her students to find
ways to integrate social studies into language arts, which is. One way they have
done so is to prepare a unit for a third-grade class at
Hillcrest Elementary School this week. The third-graders
got a taste of what it was like in a one-room school house in the 19th
century. They
walked around the school, to simulate walking to school, they
wrote on slates, and some even had to wear a dunce cap in the
corner. ÒThe
(elementary-school) loved it,Ó Winter
said.
WinterÕs
own students are learning to research with original sources as
they look for 19th century school-house furniture. They have spent some
time with a Democratic weekly newspaper called the Alamance
Gleamer, which published from 1875 to 1963, according to a
Library of Congress website.
She took her class to Colonial Williamsburg on Friday
to get a look at what successful historic restoration can be. Rothrock worked at
Colonial Williamsburg, Winter
said.
Common
Schools,
like the Travis Creek School, provided free education to all
white children who wanted it.
The state policy came from the Whig political party and
its appeal to the common man, McDuff wrote. Of the 2,854 common
schools statewide, Alamance County had 46. McDuff found two of
the buildings were still standing. The Graham or Capps school was about four miles south
of Graham, but has been moved.
The
Travis
Creek school in Elon was built in
the early 1850s. It
closed, like all the Common Schools, after the Civil War when
the state was bankrupt. It
reopened in the 1870s, when the state restarted public
education, as the Cable School, named after Israel Cable, who , along with Daniel Huffines,
originally sold the land for the school. It served as a
school until the 1890s, Winter
said. It served
different purposes since, but has been empty for many years. Winter seemed
impressed with the restoration.
ÒTheyÕre
trying
to take it back to what it was in the
1870s,Ó Winter said. Winter
said Rothrock, the restoration contractor, could date stages
of the building by the kinds of nails in the wood. The tin roof came
off this week to be replaced with wood shingles typical of the
19th century, Winter
said.
Modern
school
children, Winter said, could learn
a lot from visiting the old school. The work takes time,
and winter is not sure when it will be ready. She wants to have
period furniture when it is.
ÒThe question is,Ó Winter
said, Òis there any of that furniture left in the community?Ó If there are
